Breidabólstadur is an old church-farm and a lot of people come there every year, especially to have a look at the beautiful church, to hear it‘s unlike story and to learn about the many ministers who have served there.
A church has been at Breidabólstadur since 1070 a.d. but christianity in Iceland was first established at the Althingi at Thingvellir in a very diplomatic way year 1000 a.d. Now there is a church there designed by the architect Rögnvaldur Ólafsson. The church was built in 1912.
Many famous ministers have served as pastors at Breiðabólstaður, f. ex. Jón Helgi Ögmundsson, Högni Sigurðsson who had 17 children, 9 girls and 8 boys and all the boys became ministers. But the most famous one is probably Tómas Sæmundsson, who was very active in the independence movement in the late 19th century. Tómas‘s friends, Fjölnismenn, gave the church a huge and incredibly heavy monument when Tómas died, and it now stands in the graveyard of Breiðabólstaðarkirkja and can not be moved except in the great Southern earthquakes.
